A great tour guide, genuine person and a stunning beauty. Thank you Chee Chee for keeping me company outside the courthouse and making my trip to Boston all that more amazing.

A few weekends ago. I went out to Antelope Island with my good friends, Scott and Sarah Nicholson and family. Sarah is about to have their 5th child and wanted some pregnancy pictures taken. The gnats were horrible on the island. Good thing they don't show up in pictures. But we all had a good time playing in the Salt Lake and taking pictures. Above pictures shot with the iphone (i know it seems like I only post iphone images on here) as we were leaving the beach...
Home

I have been preparing extensively to make my big move to NYC in September. I bought my plane ticket, got an apartment lined up with my amazing friend Tommy (we are going to have so much fun!), I ordered new portfolio's and got my logo engraved on them, got a passport, saved, saved, saved. I think I am ready to go, and I am so excited. But at the same time I am having mixed emotions.
I was shooting little league baseball portraits this week in American Fork, UT and while we were setting up the wind blew in my direction and I smelt a fragrance that I hadn't smelt in a long time. Instantly memories of my childhood flooded in my mind. I could see the front yard at my home and imagine in my mind the fence lined with lilac bushes. I remember as a child crawling under the bushes pushing my truck, fetching the ball that was thrown under the bush. I remember running around the bushes playing tag and hiding in their branches trying not to get found in hide and seek. Then years later I remember how annoying i thought the bushes were when my parents made us do yard work, the dead leaves were almost impossible to rake out. But all in all the bushes were beautiful. Then even many more years later after moving away to college, and after my dad passed away, I remember visiting my childhood home and standing at the front gate enveloped by those same lilac bushes tears running down my face as those same memories flooded my mind again knowing that this was no longer my HOME. Then I went back to college in Utah and made my home here. But for a second standing in the middle of a baseball field, my childhood came back with the simple fresh smell of those lilac bushes.
Fighters Out Take...

This is Deidre. She was so kind to come and pose for me while I worked out my lighting plan for the fighters portraits (which are coming soon.) Funny how I always have these grand lighting plans, and I ultimately come back to one light and a softbox. I am working on it though. Anyway, I thought this image was beautiful. Thanks D.

PDF Portfolio

I have been working lately to create a pdf portfolio document to send to people in NYC for networking before I move there in September. I found a really cool thing called ISSUU. They allow you to upload a pdf and make a really cool online magazine to embed in blogs, websites, ect. Here is what I did with some of my images and resume...
The stories we are obligated to tell...
23 March 2010 | Posted by Michael at 10:51 AM |
This is a hard thing for me to wrap my head around. I am not a photojournalist. I understand that the story must be told and in our society we use the lens of the camera to tell stories and get them to as many people as possible and very quickly. However some part of this picture felt wrong. This led me to an article called Why We Must See that discusses how photographers are able to photograph some of the most horrific events in our history. Go read it. I think that photographers have an obligation to tell stories. Even those stories are hard to cover. While my gut reaction to the above image was one of disgust and sadness, the truth is, the stories have to be told. What are your thoughts... as photographers how do we cover stories that are difficult and still love the profession we are in?
VEGAS!

I have been to Vegas quite a few times since moving to Utah. It is close and kind of a nice escape. However, I am kind of over the strip and the touristy sections of the strip and tend to gravitate to the older run down sections of the city. So here are some shots...
